King Holiday 2021

The Urgency of Creating the Beloved Community!

Each year, The King Center in Atlanta leads the nationwide observance of the national holiday commemorating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme and call to action, for the 2021 Observance is “The Urgency of Creating the Beloved Community!”

The King Center, like the rest of the world, has had to switch the way it does business. This includes pivoting to virtual events and reimagining The Salute to Greatness Awards Gala as the Beloved Community Awards. Please take a moment to review the attached 2021 King Holiday Observance sponsorship opportunities and make your commitment today! Together, with your support, we can continue to educate the world about the importance of embracing nonviolence as a lifestyle, while moving ever closer to creating the Beloved Community.

How The King Holiday Began

  • The King Holiday

Signed into law in January 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is a celebration of Dr. King’s immeasurable contribution to the United States, and to humankind.

  • The Meaning of The King Holiday

Coretta Scott King reflects on the meaning of The King Holiday. “The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America.”

  • Making of The King Holiday

Legislation for a King Holiday was first introduced four days after Dr. King’s assassination, signed into law in 1983, and then spread to the states. See the timeline of events.
