Martin Luther King, Jr. described the “Beloved Community” as a society where “caring and compassion drive political policies that support the worldwide elimination of poverty and hunger and all forms of bigotry and violence. At its core, the ‘Beloved Community’ is an engine of reconciliation.”

On January 12th, 2024, The King Center is rallying educators, students, educational institutions and learning organizations across the world to participate in our Beloved Community Teach-In. This worldwide initiative aims to engage people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about the enduring legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Participants will discover how we can work collectively to carry on the Kings’ mission of creating the Beloved Community – a global society founded on justice, equal opportunity and love of one’s fellow human beings. This teach-in represents a chance for people everywhere to gain inspiration from studying the example of the Kings while also determining their own role in advancing their inclusive vision for humanity. The King Center hopes classrooms and centers of learning across the globe will take part in this empowering day of discussion, reflection and action.

We are on a mission to empower students to create the Beloved Community by spreading compassion through education. The theme for the 2024 King Holiday asserts the need for individuals to spearhead positive societal transformation, stating “It Starts with Me: Shifting the Cultural Climate Through the Study and Practice of Kingian Nonviolence.” Aligning with this idea, the lesson plans developed for the 2024 King Holiday Teach-In aims to equip students’ with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become proactive contributors to the creation of the Beloved Community while also succeeding in life. By registering for the Teach-In event, educators will gain access to K-12 lesson plans encompassing defined learning objectives, and reflective activities concentrated on motivating students to grow in empathy, embrace differences, and initiate positive changes driven by care for humankind. With guidance from these lesson plans focused squarely on fostering kindness and goodwill, educators have the opportunity to activate young change makers devoted wholeheartedly to nonviolent societal transformation. The activities aim to show youth how even small acts of kindness centered on selfless love and interpersonal understanding can contribute to the creation of the Beloved Community.
