Top Leaders Join Coretta Scott King 85th Birthday Celebration, Book Signing

On April 27th, The King Center hosted the gala celebration of the 85th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Coretta Scott King and book signing of "Desert Rose,' a new biography of Coretta Scott King by her late sister, Edythe Scott Bagley. With anchorwoman Angela Robinson serving as mistress of ceremonies, the program featured presentations by major public figures and elected officials, including: Former President of the United States Bill Clinton (video tribute); Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (video tribute); Congressman John Lewis (D-GA); Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed; Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell; and Councilman Kwanza Hall. Also participating were: best-selling author and performing artist Dr. Maya Angelou (video tribute); Dr. Charlestine Fairley, Dean of the Southern Maryland Campus of Sojourner Douglass College; Grammy and Emmy-award winning singer/actress Ms. Jennifer Holiday; Ms. Valencia Burse and; New York Times best-selling author Joe Hilley, along with King and Scott family members: Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center; Dr. Christine King Farris, member of the King Center Board of Trustees; Mrs. Naomi King, chair emeritus A.D. King Board of Directors and ; Mr. Arturo Scott Bagley, member of The King Center Board of Trustees and son of Edythe Scott Bagley, author of "Desert Rose." Pictured below, King Center CEO Bernice A. King, who penned the Afterword for the biography, signs a copy of 'Desert Rose' for one of the estimated 400 plus celebrants.
