[Anselm's theory, as amplified by Aquinas, became normative for Catholic theology. In the penal theory of the Reformers, Christ's death is still understood as the satisfaction rendered for sin, but whenever Anselm had made sin a violation of the Divine Honor and had distinguished between satisfaction and punishment, the Reformers treated sin as a violation of Divine Justice and satisfaction as consistency in the actual punishment accepted by Christ.
